Speaker of the National Assembly Justin Muturi is one lucky man after attempts to poison him failed. The House speaker received a letter that was laced with zinc phosphate, an ingredient of rat poison with a newspaper cutting demanding for payment of retirement benefits for teachers from Nyeri county.
Muturi said he did not understand why the letter was sent to him since he does not sit in the Treasury. He told the Star:
“I don’t know why they sent it to me because I don’t sit in the Treasury and I’m not responsible for the payment of retirement benefits to teachers….”
A senior CID officer said that investigation are underway as teachers from Nyeri have distanced themselves from the attempt of the Speakers life.
The letter that was addressed to the Speaker and Parliament was delivered on Monday when Muturi was away on an official trip to Germany. In 2012, the National Assembly approved a motion compelling the government to pay more than 52,000 teachers retirement dues.
It has been a long 18 years wait for the payment by teachers.
